Look man, it's just a different answer to the question. People don't bat an eye that Subaru makes both a BRZ and a WRX for about the same price. Both are great cars. Both have strengths and weaknesses. People prioritize those strengths and weaknesses differently.

Is the GT-R the bestest car that has ever been made? Of course not. It is a physics-bending tech tour-de-force. A testament that sometimes complicate and add heaviness can actually work. And while I've never driven one, I have gone for a ride in one. I can say that it was about the furthest from boring thing I've ever done.

For my money, I'd probably pick a much slower 991 Carrera 2S, because fanboy. But if someone picked a GT-R, or a Viper, or a ZR1, or an R8, etc they're not wrong, they're just different. We're in a golden age right now where there are just so many good performance cars, let's enjoy it.

Godzilla is freaking awesome. Yeah its kind of ugly, but to me that's kind of the point. It bludgeons physics into submission with computers and makes running the front wheels off a rear trans axle actually seem like a good idea.

And considering it's a $100k track monster, I've seen a bunch of them in the wild.

Great post. I totally agree. I think the Jalopnik community sort of frowns on those of us that don't lust after an E whatever or a Miata. You don't have to drive around a track car or a Miata to love car culture. Sometimes I think automotive journalist lose sight of what it mean to just truly love cars.

A GTR is about as fast as you can go for under 100K (not just straight line).

It's a fun car for sure I've had the opportunity to drive a few. I probably wouldn't buy one though, it's not exactly my type. Amazingly cool car still, but I'd rather have something else.

What's also cool about the GT-R is that Joe Average can get in and immediately go pretty fast. Put Joe Average in, say, a Viper and he would immediately go pretty upside down and on fire. And that's in the dry. If it rains? Yikes.

But yes, cars like this may generate fans based on metrics and spreadsheet numbers, but they actually sell on raw emotion. Many, if not most, will never see an actual apex, let alone one on a clock. It's all about putting the biggest smile on the potential owner's face.
